2. Basil Oil

Basil essential oilreduces the inflammatory response of allergens. It also supports the adrenal glands, which are involved in producing over 50 hormones that drive almost every bodily function. Essentially, basil essential oil is helping your body to react appropriately to a threat by rushing blood to your brain, heart and muscles.

Basil oil also helps to detoxify the body of bacteria and viruses, while fighting inflammation, pain and fatigue.

Studies prove that basil oil shows antimicrobial activity and can kill bacteria, yeast and mold that can lead to asthma and respiratory damage. (3,4)

Remedy: To fight inflammation and regulate the overreaction of the immune system when faced with an allergen, take one drop of basil oil internally by adding it to soup, salad dressing or any other dish. To support the respiratory system, dilute 2–3 drops of basil oil with equal parts coconut oil and apply topically to the chest, back of neck and temples.

Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil opens up the lungs and sinuses, thereby improving circulation and reducing symptoms of allergies. Studies own shown that it produces a freezing sensation in the nose that helps to improve airflow. (5)

Eucalyptus contains citronellal, which has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects; it also works as an expectorant, helping to cleanse the body of toxins and harmful microorganisms that are acting as allergens.

A 2011 study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that eucalyptus essential oil was an effective treatment for upper respiratory tract infections.

Patients who were treated with eucalyptus spray reported an improvement in the severity of their most debilitating respiratory tract infection symptoms compared to participants in the placebo group. Improvement was defined as a reduction of sore throat, hoarseness or cough. (6)

Remedy: To treat respiratory issues associated with allergies, diffuse five drops of eucalyptus at home or apply it topically to the chest and temples. To clear the nasal passages and relieve congestion, pour a cup of boiling water into a bowl and add 1–2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil. Then put a towel over your head and inhale deeply for 5–10 minutes.

Lemon Oil

Lemon oil supports lymphatic system drainage and helps with overcoming respiratory conditions. Studies own shown that lemon essential oil inhibits the growth of bacteria and boosts the immune system. When diffused at home, lemon oil can kill bacteria and eliminate allergy triggers in the air. (7,8)

Adding 1–2 drops of lemon essential oil to water also helps with pH balance. Lemon waterimproves immune function and detoxifies the body. It stimulates the liver and flushes out toxins that can lead to inflammation and an overreactive immune system.

Lemon water also stimulates white blood cell production, which is vital for immune system function because it helps to protect the body.

Lemon essential oil can also be used to disinfect your home, without depending on alcohol or bleach. It will remove bacteria and pollutants from your kitchen, bedroom and bathroom — reducing the triggers inside of your home and keeping the air clean for you and your family.

This can be especially helpful as the seasons change and allergens from exterior are being brought into your home on shoes and clothes.

Remedy: Add lemon oil to your laundry detergent, stir a couple of drops with water and spray it on your couches, sheets, curtains and carpets.

1. Peppermint Oil

Inhaling diffusedpeppermint oilcan oftentimes immediately unclog the sinuses and offer relief to scratchy throats. Peppermint acts as an expectorant and provides relief for allergies, as well as colds, coughs, sinusitis, asthma and bronchitis.

Remedy: Diffuse five drops of peppermint essential oil at home to unclog sinuses and treat a scratchy throat. This will also assist to relax the nasal muscles, enabling the body to clear out mucus and allergens love pollen. To reduce inflammation, take 1–2 drops of pure peppermint essential oil internally once a day.

It can be added to a glass of water, cup of tea or smoothie. Peppermint oil can also be applied topically to the chest, back of neck and temples. For people with sensitive skin, it is best to dilute peppermint with coconut or jojoba oil before topical application.

5. Tea Tree Oil

This powerful oil can destroy airborne pathogens that cause allergies.

Diffusing tea tree oilin the home will kill mold, bacteria and fungi. It is an antiseptic agent and it has anti-inflammatory properties. Tea tree oil can be applied to the skin to kill bacteria and microorganisms; it can also be used as a household cleaner to disinfect the home and eliminate allergens. (9)

A 2000 study conducted in Germany found that tea tree oil exhibits antimicrobial activity against a wide range of bacteria, yeasts and fungi.

These microbes lead to inflammation and force our immune system to work on overdrive. (10)

Remedy: Use tea tree oil on skin rashes and hives or as a household cleaner. When using tea tree topically, add 2–3 drops to a clean cotton ball and gently apply to the area of concern. For people with sensitive skin, dilute tea tree with a carrier oil first, love coconut or jojoba oil.


How to Use Essential Oils for Allergies

Food Allergies — Take 1–2 drops of lemon or peppermint oil internally to relieve the symptoms of a food allergy.

This will assist to detoxify the body and eliminate the allergens through sweat or urination.

Skin Rash & Hives — Use tea tree or basil oil topically to treat skin rashes and hives. Add 2–3 drops to a cotton ball and apply to the affected area. Layering oils over the liver area is another way to treat skin irritations because it helps the liver to flush out toxins that burden the skin. Dilute 3–4 drops of tea tree oil with coconut oil and rub it into the liver area.

Seasonal Allergies — Disinfect your home with lemon and tea tree oil; this will eliminate triggers and cleanse the air and your furniture. Add 40 drops of lemon oil and 20 drops of tea tree oil to a 16-ounce spray bottle.

Fill the bottle with pure water and a little bit of white vinegar and spray the mixture on any area in your home.

Possible Side Effects

When using these special essential oil for allergies, I don’t recommend that you take tea tree oil internally; it’s best to use tea tree aromatically or topically.

When using any of these oils topically, dilute with a carrier oil, especially when using on sensitive skin or one sensitive areas, love under the eyes or on the neck.

When using essential oils internally, a little goes a endless way. Only consume 1–2 drops a day for one month. Then take a two-week break and start the treatment again.

When I was growing up in Chicago, I can vividly remember how I looked forward to the change of seasons — Every FOUR OF THEM!

The mid-west was an open, clean, unused put to live. I spent most of my free time outdoors. We almost never played inside. We had numerous amazing forest preserves, lakes and hiking paths. I loved being in nature.

At the time, I was unaware of how pollen and grasses affected people. I never had a problem with any seasonal allergies. However, I knew several people that did. I would privately make enjoyment of them, in my mind. I just could not believe that people could be suffering so miserably with allergies, hay fever, sinusitis etc. It seemed almost “too dramatic” for me. However, I tried to understand how maybe it affected them and make an effort to be sympathetic.

They were always going for Sinus X-rays, CT Scans and using a plethora of antihistamines, decongestants and steroidal sprays and inhalers.

Then, about 27 years ago, I moved to the East Coast. Initially the seasons were beautiful much the same, but not for endless. Everything started to change. Perhaps the unhealthy climate changes, our polluted environment and dramatic fluctuations in the barometric pressure contributed to my newly developing allergy symptoms: sinus pressure, headaches, congestion, sneezing, phlegm and an annoying cough. OH BROTHER, NOT ME, I thought!

I found myself in the same position as I mentioned above – blame KARMA!

What essential oils are excellent for eye allergies

There I was with a cabinet full of every the over the counter (OTC) allergy medications you could imagine, and beautiful much addicted to Sudafed. Then I just could not stand taking those chemicals anymore. They made me feel so crummy! Can anybody relate?

It was about that time that I had a personal and spiritual awakening, about my health and my life… I knew I needed to be more mindful of looking for a natural and holistic approach to treating this condition, as well as in my life in general.

This is when I started using Essential Oils to treat my sinus and upper respiratory symptoms. I use them religiously and own to tell that I cannot remember the final time I took an OTC allergy medication.

Allergens trigger symptoms in the nose, throat, lungs, ears and sinuses.

Therefore, I thought perhaps you might love to attempt something a little diverse if you suffer with these symptoms. I diffuse essential oils in my home almost constantly. I switch up my essential oil choices depending on the time of year and the symptoms I own. Here a few tips that might assist you too!

  3. Eucalyptus Essential Oil opens up the sinus and lungs, therefore improving circulation, which reduces the symptoms of allergies. It works as an expectorant, but also has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
  4. Lavender Essential Oil works as a natural antihistamine and possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties that will treat an relieve most allergic reactions.
  5. Lemon Essential Oil works as a natural antihistamine relieving excess mucous and cools below inflammatory reaction. It also helps with respiratory conditions. Lemon is also known for its anti-bacterial properties.

    What essential oils are excellent for eye allergies

    Its best used in a mix with Lavender and Peppermint.

Depending on the capacity of your diffuser, use 2-5 drops of any of these oils mentioned, in whatever combination you love. You could also use 1 drop of each of these oils on a tissue and just directly inhale deeply. Experiment to discover the combination that gives you the most relief.

It’s The Time of the Season…

Essential Oils for Allergies

Ahh, spring is in the air!

The beautiful weather of spring; flowers are blooming, birds are chirping, the air is crisp, and the weather is getting warmer. Spring is the perfect time to spend more time outdoors. Yet, for numerous people, spending more time outdoors, is accompanied by itchy, watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing and coughing, every brought on by seasonal allergies.

Many people suffer from allergies, some year circular and some just seasonal. When an allergen enters the body, the immune system sees it as an invader (even though most times, it is not a harmful substance) and overreacts, releasing something called Immunoglobulin E antibodies.

These antibodies travel to cells that release histamines and other chemicals that trigger the inflammatory response in the body, hence, the allergic reaction.
The most common causes of allergies include pollen, dust, mold, insect bites, animal dander, food, medications, and latex. Every of these allergens can trigger symptoms in the nose, throat, lungs, ears, sinuses, the lining of the stomach, or on the skin.

People who suffer from seasonal allergies (also known as hay fever) are allergic to pollen, trees, grass, weeds, fungi and mold spores.
● Tree pollen – these tend to affect people in the spring.


● Grass pollen – these tend to affect people later on in the spring and also in the summer.
● Weed pollen – these are more common during autumn.
● Fungi and mold spores – these are more common when the weather is warm

When you are suffering from seasonal allergies, you are probably more interested in what will stop the symptoms than what is causing them.

However, when you know what is causing them, you can almost always discover relief from the symptoms.

Which oils do I use and how do I use them?

There are numerous essential oils that can assist with allergies. Let’s start with one of the most versatile essential oils of every. Lavender! Not only can Lavender oil assist alleviate allergy symptoms, but it can also give you energy, assist you sleep and so much more.

Here are some ways to use Lavender oil to relieve or eliminate allergy symptoms.
– Put 2-3 drops of Lavender into the palm of your hand.

Rub hands together and inhale deeply 3-4 times a day.
– Put some Lavender on your forehead, on your temples, behind and in front of your ears, and on the front and back of your neck.
– Put 1 drop of Lavender to the sole of each foot and massage gently into the foot. Repeat 2x day.
– Rub a drop or two of Lavender oil between your nose and upper lip so you can inhale the perfume and anti-inflammatory properties throughout the day.

Many of these protocols can be used with other Essential oils as well.

One of my extremely favorite, homemade natural anti-histamine potions, is a combination of three extremely effective Essential oils (of course, one of them is Lavender).

Dina’s “Brews”

– Peppermint – among its numerous benefits, is extremely beneficial for respiratory, digestive, sinus and liver disorders, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic
– Lemon – stimulating while calming, is antiseptic, detoxifying, anti-inflammatory, anti-infection, antifungal, can kill bacteria and eliminate allergy triggers in the air and much more.*
– Lavender – as we know….extremely versatile – anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, prevents scarring in every tissues, even lungs

● Combine three drops each with a carrier oil (fractionated coconut oil, V-6 oil, or other vegetable oil).

Apply to the chest, back, and soles of feet 2-3 times per day.
● Diffuse 1-2 drops each
● Inhalation method – rub in palms of hands, cup hands over nose and inhale.
● Combine 3 -5 drops each with distilled or filtered water in an 8 oz. spray bottle, spray your surroundings. Take with you especially when you are going to be spending time outdoors and spray as needed (also works grand as an insect repellent!).

*Be certain to avoid direct exposure to the sun after using lemon oil on exposed skin.

Homemade vapor rub
● Combine 2-3 drops each Lavender, Eucalyptus, and Peppermint with one teaspoon carrier oil (coconut, V-6, jojoba) and massage into temples, behind ears, soles of feet, chest, back, between the nose and upper lip.

Other Essential Oils useful for allergies:
● Basil Oil – To support the respiratory system, dilute 2–3 drops of basil oil with equal parts coconut oil or other carrier oil and apply topically to the chest, back of neck and temples.

Basil essential oil reduces the inflammatory response to allergens.
● Eucalyptus Oil – To treat respiratory issues associated with allergies, diffuse five drops of eucalyptus at home or apply it topically to the chest and temples. To clear the nasal passages and relieve congestion, boil a cup of water and add 1–2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil, then put a towel over your head and inhale deeply for as endless as you can up to 5-10 minutes.
● Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca) This powerful oil can destroy airborne pathogens that cause allergies.

Diffusing tea tree oil in the home will kill mold, bacteria, and fungi. It is an antiseptic agent, and it has anti-inflammatory properties.

When you suffer from allergies, it is significant to disinfect your home and office often:
● In a 16oz spray bottle, combine 40 drops of lemon oil with 20 drops of tea tree oil (Melaleuca) with filtered water and a bit of white vinegar. Spray mixture around your home.
● Lemon oil reduces triggers inside your home. Add a few drops lemon oil to your laundry detergent, stir a couple of drops with water and spray it on your couches, sheets, curtains, and carpets.
● Diffuse a few drops Lemon oil throughout the day in your home or office.

This list is by no means all-inclusive.

There are numerous Essential oils that are useful in treatment and prevention of allergies. I tried to narrow it below to some of the most effective oils. Any of these oils can be diffused, inhaled, and used alone or combined; they can be applied topically to the chest, back, soles of feet, etc.

Essential Oils to the Rescue

The excellent news is essential oils can offer relief and even prevention of seasonal allergy symptoms. One of the most amazing benefits of essential oils is their ability to boost the immune system and fight inflammation. Using essential oils for allergies will assist fight infections, bacteria, parasites and harmful toxins by helping to detoxify the body.

Essential oils can assist reduce the overreaction of the immune system when faced with a harmless substance it sees as an invader. Some essential oils work to relieve respiratory conditions, helping to eliminate toxins by increasing sweat and urination. They can also be used to cool below the body after an allergic response.

A expression on Carrier Oils…

Carrier oils, also known as base oils or vegetable oils, are naturally derived from vegetarian sources and own a neutral smell. They are used to dilute essential oils when they are applied topically to the skin or taken internally. They are called “carrier” oils because they carry the essential oil into the skin and body.

Essential oils are volatile, meaning, they contain the natural smell and characteristics of the plant and they evaporate rapidly. This can make some essential oils too strong to apply directly to the skin. Diluting with a carrier oil reduces the concentration of the essential oil without altering its therapeutic qualities. You can control an essential oil’s concentration before applying by diluting with a carrier oil.

Carrier oils vary widely in their absorption ability, aromas, shelf life and other properties. They can be blended or used by themselves. Because carrier oils are high in fat, they own a limited shelf life, which means they can go bad.

Be certain to store oils in their original containers in a cool, dark put to maximize their shelf life.

Here are some of the most widely used carrier oils and their properties

● Fractionated Coconut Oil – The difference between “regular” coconut oil and fractionated coconut oil, is that fractionated coconut oil is liquid at room temperature. It has no noticeable aroma and absorbs well into the skin helping to moisturize without feeling greasy. It is high in essential fatty acids and has a endless shelf life.
● Grapeseed Oil – This is a extremely light, thin oil which makes it grand for use in massage. It is high in linoleic acid and extremely moisturizing.

It has a relatively short shelf life.
● V-6 Carrier Oil* – This organic oil is a proprietary mix by Young Living. It combines fractionated coconut oil, grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil, wheat germ oil (contains a lot of vitamin E and acts as a natural preservative), sunflower oil and olive oil. It is a grand carrier oil for every your best essential oils and applications. Has a endless shelf life.
*CAUTION – may cause a reaction to those with nut allergies.
● Olive Oil- that’s right….good ancient Olive Oil.

Simple to discover and extremely favorite in both culinary and topical applications. Olive oil has a thicker consistency and leaves an oily feel on the skin. It has a stronger aroma and is a excellent source of omega fatty acid (oleic acid). Olive oil has a relatively short shelf life.
● Coconut Oil – Has a distinct coconut aroma and is solid at room temperature. It has a solid white color and is used widely as a moisturizer. Coconut oil has a endless shelf life.

These are just some of the more favorite and effective Carrier oils. There are numerous others out there. A lot of Young Living essential oils can be applied “neat” which means, they can be applied directly to the skin, but when in doubt….dilute, dilute, dilute.

Dilution is especially significant if you own sensitive skin. Be certain if you ever mistakenly get essential oils in or near your eyes, that you do not apply water, this will exacerbate the irritation, instead, immediately apply a carrier to the area and this will neutralize the irritation.

Essential oils own become favorite in recent years, and are used for their supposed health benefits.

These oils are made from various plant products and are used in various ways. Oils can be diffused into the air, called aromatherapy, or used topically on the skin. Oils can also be taken by mouth and ingested internally. By doing so, homeopathic practitioners claim that these oils own various health benefits, include physical, mental and spiritual. While essential oils are derived from natural plant sources, this doesn’t mean that they can’t cause side effects, especially allergic reactions.


Contact Dermatitis

The most commonly reported allergic reaction to essential oils is contact dermatitis.

Contact dermatitis from essential oils causes an itchy, bumpy rash on the skin at the site of contact with the oil. The rash may appear similar to poison oak, may own blisters and peel when the rash is resolving. It is also possible to own systemic contact dermatitis from taking the essential oils internally (by mouth). In this circumstance, a person may experience a full body rash, whole body itching (without a rash), and/or abdominal pains and diarrhea.

Contact dermatitis to essential oils may happen in people who own experienced past rashes to fragrances or own allergy symptoms related to weed pollens. People with this type of medical history should be extremely cautious when using any essential oil and should consider performing a patch test by placing a little quantity of the oil on the skin at the fold of the elbow (antecubital fossa) twice a day for 3 to 5 days.

If there is no reaction at the site of the oil application after the 5th day or so, then it is not likely that a person is allergic to the oil being used. If, however, the skin at the site of oil application becomes red and itchy, or the skin blisters and peels, then that specific oil should not be used by the person.


Nasal Allergies and Asthma

People with nasal allergies and asthma, especially those allergic to weed pollens, should use extreme caution with using essential oils, especially when diffusing or ingesting the oils. Essential oils are made from various plant products, generally weeds, which may contain significant allergens—especially when the flowers of the plants are being used.

Inhaling or ingesting these essential oils could result in symptoms or nasal and eye allergies, and even asthma symptoms. It is possible that these symptoms could be dangerous and even life-threatening in extremely sensitive individuals.


Non-Allergic Rhinitis

Even if a person doesn’t normally suffer from nasal allergies doesn’t mean that he or she wouldn’t own some form of nasal symptoms as a result of using essential oils. Strong odors from the use of essential oils—including from diffusing, ingesting or topical use—could result in nasal symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion or postnasal drip.

What essential oils are excellent for eye allergies

These symptoms aren’t always a result of nasal allergies. People without allergies can still experience symptoms as a result of an irritant effect from the strong odors.

There is no test for non-allergic rhinitis per se; this is a diagnosis of exclusion that is made as a result of not finding any allergic cause of a person’s nasal symptoms. However, the symptoms are genuine, and often more hard to treat than those of allergic rhinitis. Avoidance of irritant triggers, however, remains the mainstay of the treatment of non-allergic rhinitis.

If you suffer from contact dermatitis from fragrances, own a history of allergies to weed pollens, own significant asthma or chronic nasal symptoms, I would highly recommend speaking with your physician, allergist or dermatology prior to the use of any essential oil product.

Dosage

Dose is the most significant factor in essential oil safety. Some essential oils used in the incorrect doses or too high a concentration own been found (in animal and laboratory studies) to contribute to tumor development and other harmful changes in the body. Some essential oils can even be damaging to the skin, liver and other organs if used improperly.

  • Purity

    Sometimes essential oils are altered by adding synthetic chemicals or other, similar smelling, essential oils or they are sometimes diluted with vegetable oil.

    Glance for language indicating purity on the label. It is not necessarily bad if the label indicates, for example, that the bottle contains 20% essential oil and 80% vegetable oil. This is sometimes done so that favorite but expensive oils love rose or neroli (that can cost over $100 per teaspoon when pure) can be made more affordable. If you ponder you are starting with 100% essential oil and you are not, however, you may be disappointed with the results. On the other hand, if you are starting with professional quality essential oils, which are generally much more concentrated, you need to dilute them to be safe.

  • Application method

    An essential oil that is safe when applied in one way may not be safe when used in another way.

    Some oils are considered safe if inhaled, and yet may be irritating if applied to the skin in concentrations as low as 3-5%.

    What essential oils are excellent for eye allergies

    Thyme, oregano, clove, and cinnamon bark essential oils are examples of this. Several of the citrus oils, such as bergamot, lemon, lime, orange, and angelica, can cause phototoxicity (severe burns or skin cancer) if there is exposure to natural sunlight or sun-bed radiation following skin applications, whereas this would not result from inhalation.

    Be certain to clarify the recommended application method and concentration for the essential oil and intended use.

    And once again, don’t ingest oils without professional guidance.

Given the complicated chemistry of essential oils, however, it makes sense that this is possible or even likely.
