According to Mosby’s Medical Dictionary, an allergic reaction is “an unfavorable physiological response to a substance (called an allergen) to which a person has previously been exposed and to which the person has developed antibodies.” According to the same dictionary, an allergen is “a substance, which may not be intrinsically harmful, that can produce a hypersensitivity reaction in the body.”


Common sense cautions for avoiding skin irritation with essential oils

  1. Consider using essential oils internally rather than topically (if appropriate), as sensitization is less likely to happen with the internal use of oils.
  2. If a rash, irritation, or itching develops following essential oil exposure, stop using essential oils until the problem clears up.
  3. Eat a healthy diet and take supplements in order to maintain excellent antioxidant status.
  4. Do not apply photosensitizing oils to skin that is exposed to UV light.

    Do not apply Bergamot essential oil to the skin at all.

  5. Avoid using essential oils along with other cosmetics or chemicals, as these other products may potentiate sensitization.
  6. Use special caution if you drop into a category that places you at higher risk for developing ACD (above).
  7. Protect essential oils from oxidation by replacing caps immediately after use, keeping them in amber glass containers and preferably in a dark location, protecting them from heat, keeping them in the smallest possible container to minimize exposure to oxygen, storing them in the refrigerator, and discarding them according to the time frames above (or sooner if you see or smell evidence of oxidation).
  8. Always dilute “hot” oils such as oregano, thyme, clove, cassia, and cinnamon before applying them to the skin.
  9. When possible, dilute essential oils, especially in patients at risk for developing ACD.
  10. Use the lowest effective concentration, particularly when you are using essential oils on an ongoing basis.
  11. If you are a person who is prone to the development of ACD (above), avoid conditions that enhance the absorption of essential oils, such as covering the site of application with occlusive dressings, applying heat over the site of application, or using “driver” oils such as peppermint along with other oils.


Circumstances under which essential oils can act as allergens

Phenols

While the vast majority of allergens are protein or polypeptide in nature, phenols are one type of compound found in essential oils which can, in some cases, elicit a true allergic response.

Potentially allergenic phenol compounds found in essential oils include phenolic ethers, phenolic sesquiterpenes, and phenolic diterpenes. Examples of essential oils that contain these substances include:

  1. Cypress
  2. Clove
  3. Basil
  4. Fennel
  5. Clary Sage

Haptens

Some essential oils contain compounds that can act as haptens. A hapten is a little, reactive molecule that, when combined with a skin protein, can cause the formationof antibodies and lead to an allergic reaction. This means that certain essential oils are capable of eliciting a true allergic response, even though they do not contain polypeptides and/or proteins themselves.

It is hard to predict which essential oils will act as haptens, but it does seem clear that oxidized essential oils are much more prone to induce allergic contact dermatitis, perhaps by acting as haptens.

Essential oils become oxidized when they are exposed to air and this process is sped up by exposure to heat and/or UV light. For this reason, essential oils should be stored in amber or other colored glass bottles and should be kept in a temperature-controlled and ideally dark environment. For maximum shelf life, consider storing your essential oils in the refrigerator. Do not leave essential oils in your car or other circumstances where they will be exposed to high heat and hold essential oils in the smallest possible container (to minimize contact with air).

Essential oils that are more likely to cause sensitization if oxidized include:

  1. Melaleuca
  2. Cypress
  3. Juniper berry
  4. Jasmine absolute
  5. Rose
  6. Fennel
  7. Frankincense
  8. Black pepper
  9. Citrus oils (lemon, lime, grapefruit, bergamot, and wild orange)
  10. Spruce (found in Balance blend)

Keep in mind that, even when kept under ideal conditions, essential oils do not final forever.

According to Robert Tisserand, consider discarding opened bottles of essential oils after:

  1. Virtually every other essential oil –2-3 years
  2. Citrus, Lemongrass, Frankincense, Melaleuca, and Spruce oils –1-2 years
  3. Sandalwood, Vetiver, Patchouli –4-8 years

How do you know when an oil is oxidized? Often citrus oils will become cloudy or develop sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Oils that were originally blue will turn greenish. The oil will not smell as unused as it once did (although, because oxidation takes put gradually, it can be hard to perceive the change in odor without comparing the essential oil to a freshly opened bottle).

Inhalation: Rub 1 to 2 drops of lavender essential oil into the palms of your hands. Cup them over your nose and take 4-6 deep and slow breaths.

2. Peppermint Oil: has a strong, unused and minty aroma that works wonders to treat allergic reactions, especially those that cause respiratory or digestive issues.

Peppermint essential oil has pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties that come in handy soothing allergies and the painful conditions associated with them. Peppermint oil helps to open the airways, improve breathing and ease congestion as well as other symptoms of respiratory allergies

To make a chest rub: dilute 2 to 3 drops in a carrier oil of your liking and massage your chest for a few minutes to ease your allergic reactions.

Diffuse: Peppermint oil that is diffused and inhaled can oftentimes immediately unclog the sinuses and offer relief to scratchy throats.

Diffuse peppermint oil according to the directions on your diffuser throughout the day or night.

Inhalation: rub 1 to 2 drops of peppermint essential oil into the palms of your hands. Cup them over your nose and take 4 to 6 deep and slow breaths.

When I was growing up in Chicago, I can vividly remember how I looked forward to the change of seasons — Every FOUR OF THEM!

The mid-west was an open, clean, unused put to live. I spent most of my free time outdoors. We almost never played inside. We had numerous amazing forest preserves, lakes and hiking paths. I loved being in nature.

At the time, I was unaware of how pollen and grasses affected people. I never had a problem with any seasonal allergies. However, I knew several people that did. I would privately make enjoyment of them, in my mind.

I just could not believe that people could be suffering so miserably with allergies, hay fever, sinusitis etc. It seemed almost “too dramatic” for me. However, I tried to understand how maybe it affected them and make an effort to be sympathetic. They were always going for Sinus X-rays, CT Scans and using a plethora of antihistamines, decongestants and steroidal sprays and inhalers.

Then, about 27 years ago, I moved to the East Coast. Initially the seasons were beautiful much the same, but not for endless. Everything started to change. Perhaps the unhealthy climate changes, our polluted environment and dramatic fluctuations in the barometric pressure contributed to my newly developing allergy symptoms: sinus pressure, headaches, congestion, sneezing, phlegm and an annoying cough.

OH BROTHER, NOT ME, I thought!

I found myself in the same position as I mentioned above – blame KARMA! There I was with a cabinet full of every the over the counter (OTC) allergy medications you could imagine, and beautiful much addicted to Sudafed. Then I just could not stand taking those chemicals anymore.

What essential oil works for allergies

They made me feel so crummy! Can anybody relate?

It was about that time that I had a personal and spiritual awakening, about my health and my life… I knew I needed to be more mindful of looking for a natural and holistic approach to treating this condition, as well as in my life in general.

This is when I started using Essential Oils to treat my sinus and upper respiratory symptoms. I use them religiously and own to tell that I cannot remember the final time I took an OTC allergy medication.

Allergens trigger symptoms in the nose, throat, lungs, ears and sinuses.

Therefore, I thought perhaps you might love to attempt something a little diverse if you suffer with these symptoms. I diffuse essential oils in my home almost constantly. I switch up my essential oil choices depending on the time of year and the symptoms I own. Here a few tips that might assist you too!

  1. Dosage

    Dose is the most significant factor in essential oil safety. Some essential oils used in the incorrect doses or too high a concentration own been found (in animal and laboratory studies) to contribute to tumor development and other harmful changes in the body.

    Some essential oils can even be damaging to the skin, liver and other organs if used improperly.

  2. Holy Basil Essential Oil reduces the inflammatory response of allergens, and supports our immune system overall. It has antimicrobial abilities and can remove toxins from our system, as well as clear airways.
  3. Application method

    An essential oil that is safe when applied in one way may not be safe when used in another way.

    Some oils are considered safe if inhaled, and yet may be irritating if applied to the skin in concentrations as low as 3-5%. Thyme, oregano, clove, and cinnamon bark essential oils are examples of this. Several of the citrus oils, such as bergamot, lemon, lime, orange, and angelica, can cause phototoxicity (severe burns or skin cancer) if there is exposure to natural sunlight or sun-bed radiation following skin applications, whereas this would not result from inhalation.

    Be certain to clarify the recommended application method and concentration for the essential oil and intended use. And once again, don’t ingest oils without professional guidance.

  4. Lemon Essential Oil works as a natural antihistamine relieving excess mucous and cools below inflammatory reaction.

    It also helps with respiratory conditions. Lemon is also known for its anti-bacterial properties. Its best used in a mix with Lavender and Peppermint.

  5. Purity

  7. Peppermint Essential Oil is strong, unused and minty and opens clogged sinuses almost immediately.

    It also has anti-inflammatory, pain relieving and decongestant relieving abilities. It opens airways and relieves a scratchy throat.

  8. Lavender Essential Oil works as a natural antihistamine and possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties that will treat an relieve most allergic reactions.
  9. Possible drug interactions

    There is little published research on interactions between pharmaceutical drugs and essential oils. Given the complicated chemistry of essential oils, however, it makes sense that this is possible or even likely.

    As with dietary supplements and herbs, it is significant to discuss regular essential oil use with your healthcare provider and together assess any potential risks and benefits. For example, studies indicate that peppermint and eucalyptus oils increase the skin absorption of 5-fluorouracil, an anti-cancer drug (Abdullah et al 1996, Williams & Barry, 1989).

Depending on the capacity of your diffuser, use 2-5 drops of any of these oils mentioned, in whatever combination you love. You could also use 1 drop of each of these oils on a tissue and just directly inhale deeply. Experiment to discover the combination that gives you the most relief.

As a Certified Clinical Aromatherapist, this affirms for me that this is the best treatment for so numerous ailments.

It’s The Time of the Season…

Essential Oils for Allergies

Ahh, spring is in the air! The beautiful weather of spring; flowers are blooming, birds are chirping, the air is crisp, and the weather is getting warmer. Spring is the perfect time to spend more time outdoors. Yet, for numerous people, spending more time outdoors, is accompanied by itchy, watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing and coughing, every brought on by seasonal allergies.

Many people suffer from allergies, some year circular and some just seasonal.

When an allergen enters the body, the immune system sees it as an invader (even though most times, it is not a harmful substance) and overreacts, releasing something called Immunoglobulin E antibodies. These antibodies travel to cells that release histamines and other chemicals that trigger the inflammatory response in the body, hence, the allergic reaction.
The most common causes of allergies include pollen, dust, mold, insect bites, animal dander, food, medications, and latex. Every of these allergens can trigger symptoms in the nose, throat, lungs, ears, sinuses, the lining of the stomach, or on the skin.

People who suffer from seasonal allergies (also known as hay fever) are allergic to pollen, trees, grass, weeds, fungi and mold spores.
● Tree pollen – these tend to affect people in the spring.


● Grass pollen – these tend to affect people later on in the spring and also in the summer.
● Weed pollen – these are more common during autumn.
● Fungi and mold spores – these are more common when the weather is warm

When you are suffering from seasonal allergies, you are probably more interested in what will stop the symptoms than what is causing them. However, when you know what is causing them, you can almost always discover relief from the symptoms.

– Peppermint – among its numerous benefits, is extremely beneficial for respiratory, digestive, sinus and liver disorders, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic

● Combine three drops each with a carrier oil (fractionated coconut oil, V-6 oil, or other vegetable oil).

Apply to the chest, back, and soles of feet 2-3 times per day.

● Combine 3 -5 drops each with distilled or filtered water in an 8 oz. spray bottle, spray your surroundings. Take with you especially when you are going to be spending time outdoors and spray as needed (also works grand as an insect repellent!).

Homemade vapor rub
● Combine 2-3 drops each Lavender, Eucalyptus, and Peppermint with one teaspoon carrier oil (coconut, V-6, jojoba) and massage into temples, behind ears, soles of feet, chest, back, between the nose and upper lip.

Other Essential Oils useful for allergies:
● Basil Oil – To support the respiratory system, dilute 2–3 drops of basil oil with equal parts coconut oil or other carrier oil and apply topically to the chest, back of neck and temples.

Basil essential oil reduces the inflammatory response to allergens.
● Eucalyptus Oil – To treat respiratory issues associated with allergies, diffuse five drops of eucalyptus at home or apply it topically to the chest and temples. To clear the nasal passages and relieve congestion, boil a cup of water and add 1–2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil, then put a towel over your head and inhale deeply for as endless as you can up to 5-10 minutes.
● Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca) This powerful oil can destroy airborne pathogens that cause allergies. Diffusing tea tree oil in the home will kill mold, bacteria, and fungi.

It is an antiseptic agent, and it has anti-inflammatory properties.

When you suffer from allergies, it is significant to disinfect your home and office often:
● In a 16oz spray bottle, combine 40 drops of lemon oil with 20 drops of tea tree oil (Melaleuca) with filtered water and a bit of white vinegar. Spray mixture around your home.
● Lemon oil reduces triggers inside your home. Add a few drops lemon oil to your laundry detergent, stir a couple of drops with water and spray it on your couches, sheets, curtains, and carpets.
● Diffuse a few drops Lemon oil throughout the day in your home or office.

This list is by no means all-inclusive.

There are numerous Essential oils that are useful in treatment and prevention of allergies. I tried to narrow it below to some of the most effective oils. Any of these oils can be diffused, inhaled, and used alone or combined; they can be applied topically to the chest, back, soles of feet, etc.

The excellent news is essential oils can offer relief and even prevention of seasonal allergy symptoms.

One of the most amazing benefits of essential oils is their ability to boost the immune system and fight inflammation. Using essential oils for allergies will assist fight infections, bacteria, parasites and harmful toxins by helping to detoxify the body. Essential oils can assist reduce the overreaction of the immune system when faced with a harmless substance it sees as an invader. Some essential oils work to relieve respiratory conditions, helping to eliminate toxins by increasing sweat and urination. They can also be used to cool below the body after an allergic response.

Which oils do I use and how do I use them?

There are numerous essential oils that can assist with allergies.

Let’s start with one of the most versatile essential oils of every. Lavender! Not only can Lavender oil assist alleviate allergy symptoms, but it can also give you energy, assist you sleep and so much more.

Here are some ways to use Lavender oil to relieve or eliminate allergy symptoms.
– Put 2-3 drops of Lavender into the palm of your hand. Rub hands together and inhale deeply 3-4 times a day.
– Put some Lavender on your forehead, on your temples, behind and in front of your ears, and on the front and back of your neck.
– Put 1 drop of Lavender to the sole of each foot and massage gently into the foot.

Repeat 2x day.

Be certain to store oils in their original containers in a cool, dark put to maximize their shelf life.

● Fractionated Coconut Oil – The difference between “regular” coconut oil and fractionated coconut oil, is that fractionated coconut oil is liquid at room temperature.

It should be our goal to avoid inducing a hypersensitivity reaction in the first put because in some cases, once stimulated, hypersensitivity can persist for life, thus depriving the affected person of the benefits of that essential oil.

For this reason (among others) diluting essential oils may be the most effective and safe option.Although this article will emphasize cautions and points of concern, it is significant to remember that essential oils are inherently benign and can be used safely by the vast majority of people, from children to elderly, as endless as they are used in reasonable quantities and according to common sense guidelines.

Essential Oils for Allergies

Ahh, spring is in the air!

The beautiful weather of spring; flowers are blooming, birds are chirping, the air is crisp, and the weather is getting warmer. Spring is the perfect time to spend more time outdoors. Yet, for numerous people, spending more time outdoors, is accompanied by itchy, watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing and coughing, every brought on by seasonal allergies.

Many people suffer from allergies, some year circular and some just seasonal. When an allergen enters the body, the immune system sees it as an invader (even though most times, it is not a harmful substance) and overreacts, releasing something called Immunoglobulin E antibodies.

These antibodies travel to cells that release histamines and other chemicals that trigger the inflammatory response in the body, hence, the allergic reaction.
The most common causes of allergies include pollen, dust, mold, insect bites, animal dander, food, medications, and latex. Every of these allergens can trigger symptoms in the nose, throat, lungs, ears, sinuses, the lining of the stomach, or on the skin.

People who suffer from seasonal allergies (also known as hay fever) are allergic to pollen, trees, grass, weeds, fungi and mold spores.
● Tree pollen – these tend to affect people in the spring.


● Grass pollen – these tend to affect people later on in the spring and also in the summer.
● Weed pollen – these are more common during autumn.
● Fungi and mold spores – these are more common when the weather is warm

When you are suffering from seasonal allergies, you are probably more interested in what will stop the symptoms than what is causing them.

● Combine three drops each with a carrier oil (fractionated coconut oil, V-6 oil, or other vegetable oil).

Apply to the chest, back, and soles of feet 2-3 times per day.
● Diffuse 1-2 drops each
● Inhalation method – rub in palms of hands, cup hands over nose and inhale.
● Combine 3 -5 drops each with distilled or filtered water in an 8 oz. spray bottle, spray your surroundings. Take with you especially when you are going to be spending time outdoors and spray as needed (also works grand as an insect repellent!).

Homemade vapor rub
● Combine 2-3 drops each Lavender, Eucalyptus, and Peppermint with one teaspoon carrier oil (coconut, V-6, jojoba) and massage into temples, behind ears, soles of feet, chest, back, between the nose and upper lip.

Other Essential Oils useful for allergies:
● Basil Oil – To support the respiratory system, dilute 2–3 drops of basil oil with equal parts coconut oil or other carrier oil and apply topically to the chest, back of neck and temples.

Basil essential oil reduces the inflammatory response to allergens.
● Eucalyptus Oil – To treat respiratory issues associated with allergies, diffuse five drops of eucalyptus at home or apply it topically to the chest and temples. To clear the nasal passages and relieve congestion, boil a cup of water and add 1–2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil, then put a towel over your head and inhale deeply for as endless as you can up to 5-10 minutes.
● Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca) This powerful oil can destroy airborne pathogens that cause allergies.

Diffusing tea tree oil in the home will kill mold, bacteria, and fungi. It is an antiseptic agent, and it has anti-inflammatory properties.

When you suffer from allergies, it is significant to disinfect your home and office often:
● In a 16oz spray bottle, combine 40 drops of lemon oil with 20 drops of tea tree oil (Melaleuca) with filtered water and a bit of white vinegar. Spray mixture around your home.
● Lemon oil reduces triggers inside your home. Add a few drops lemon oil to your laundry detergent, stir a couple of drops with water and spray it on your couches, sheets, curtains, and carpets.
● Diffuse a few drops Lemon oil throughout the day in your home or office.

This list is by no means all-inclusive.

There are numerous Essential oils that are useful in treatment and prevention of allergies. I tried to narrow it below to some of the most effective oils. Any of these oils can be diffused, inhaled, and used alone or combined; they can be applied topically to the chest, back, soles of feet, etc.

The nature of allergens

Almost every allergens (whether pollen, dust, dander, or other substances) are proteins or polypeptides.

Both proteins and polypeptides are large molecules made up of strings of amino acids. Some polypeptides contain just a few amino acids, while some proteins contain dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of amino acids. But the bottom line is that polypeptides and proteins are large molecules. Essential oils are manufactured by a process of distillation and distillation only allows for extremely little molecules in the finished product. Most proteins and polypeptides are from 100-1000 times larger than the largest compounds found in essential oils.

The absence of polypeptides and proteins in essential oils is the reason that numerous people are capable to use essential oils produced by plants to which they are allergic without any problem.

For example, my husband is extremely allergic to black pepper. If he consumes even the smallest quantity of black pepper, his tongue will itch, his throat will swell, and he will sneeze for hours. He can, however, use Black Pepper essential oil without any reaction at every. Mountain cedar is a common allergen to numerous residents of Central Texas. The cedarwood essential oil we use is distilled from the same plant, but it does not trigger an allergic reaction in numerous who are allergic to mountain cedar pollen, whether it is applied topically or used aromatically.

It is the absence of polypeptides and proteins in essential oils that causes some people to claim that it is impossible to be allergic to an essential oil.

Unfortunately, however, the truth is more complicated than that.


Postscript

Regarding the emotional origin of allergies — I absolutely believe that emotions can frolic a role in the development of allergies. In fact I ponder of allergies as a phobia of the immune system, which gives me significant insight about how to handle them.

Imagine a person who has a phobia of snakes. No sane or compassionate individual would attempt to repair this problem by placingthe phobic individual in a dark closet with a pile of writhing of snakes (like a bad reality TV show).

To do so would induce out and out panic and would virtually guarantee that a minor phobia would become lifelong and severe.

In the same way, a person who has developed a sensitivity to an essential oil should NOT continue to be exposed to that oil in a misguided attempt to “detox”. Instead we should wait until the reaction has completely settled below and the body and the immune system is generally in a calm state. Then the oil can be reintroduced in a Extremely gradual and cautious way (in little quantities, not on consecutive days, etc), always watching for evidence of a reaction.

Possible skinreactions

Essential oils can induce three types of skin reactions:

  1. Sensitivity, aka contact dermatitis
  2. Irritation
  3. Photosensitivity

Sensitization, aka allergic contact dermatitis (ACD)

This type of reaction develops over time — multiple exposures to the offending oil are required.

At the first exposure, no reaction is evident. But then with subsequent exposure(s) (sometimes even after days, months, or even years of use), a rash or hives develop. In severe reactions, other signs such as sneezing and shortness of breath may be evident as well.

Patient characteristicsthat increase the risk for the development of ACD:
  1. Advanced age (peak incidence around age 60).
  2. Compromised antioxidant status (due to inadequate diet or chronic illness).
  3. Female gender.
  4. Psychological stress.
  5. Application of essential oils to damaged, inflamed, or irritated skin.
  6. The presence of other allergic conditions, such as asthma, eczema, and/or hay fever.
  7. Use of multiple medications.
  8. Personal or family history of dermatitis
Variables of application that increase the risk for the development of ACD:
  1. The use of isolated chemical constituents from essential oil(s), as opposed to intact essential oil(s) with the full complement of naturally-occurring components present.
  2. Frequent application of essential oil(s).

    Repeated exposure to the same essential oil over time increases the risk of developing ACD.

  3. The use of essential oils in combination with synthetic chemicals that act as irritants. Examples of such chemicals include surfactants in soaps and synthetic preservatives.
  4. The use of oxidized or denatured essential oil(s). See the list above of essential oils that are more likely to trigger sensitization when they are oxidized.
  5. The presence of contaminants or adulterants in the essential oil(s).
  6. Use of certain essential oil(s) that are more likely to trigger ACD.

    Certain essential oils are more likely to trigger ACD than others.

  7. Highly concentrated or tidy application of essential oil(s). The key factor here is “dermal loading” or the dose per unit area of skin exposed. This means that one drop of essential oil applied to one square inch of skin is much more likely to cause ACD than one drop of essential oil applied to one square foot of skin.
  8. Application conditions that result in enhanced absorption of essential oil(s). These conditions include things love covering the site of application with an occlusive dressing, applying heat on top of the application site, and using sensitizing essential oils in conjunction with “driver” oils such as peppermint or blends containing peppermint.

Irritation

An irritation reaction occurs extremely rapidly, within seconds to minutes of exposure.

When irritationoccurs following exposure to essential oils, typically the reaction is non-allergic in origin. This type of reaction typically causes a red wheal or burn and the sensation associated with this type of reaction is heat or burning. The most common cause of this type of reaction is an essential oils that is high in phenols (for example oregano, clove, or thyme) or aromatic aldehydes (for example cinnamon).

To manage this type of reaction, immediately dilute the offending oil by applying a carrier oil and follow up by washing with warm water and plain soap.

Do not wash first with water, as this will shove the oil deeper into the skin. Generally this type of reaction can be avoided by diluting “hot” oils to no more than 2-5% strength.

Photosensitivity

Photosensitivity is an interaction between a component in the essential oil, the skin, and UV photons. Photosensitivity reactions can range in severity from slight darkening of the skin at the site of application to the development of a blistering burn. The development of a photosensitive reaction is delayed, with a peak at 36-72 hours after UV exposure. Post-inflammatory skin-darkening may persist for weeks or months after the acute inflammatory phase.

The most common chemical component in essential oil that causes photosensitivity is furanocoumarins.

These substances are found mainly in cold-pressed citrus oils, including:

  1. Grapefruit
  2. Bergamot (the most likely to cause photosensitive reactions)
  3. Lime
  4. Lemon
  5. Wild Orange

Note that when citrus oils are prepared using steam distillation, the photosensitizing chemical constituents are excluded and therefore the resulting essential oil will not trigger a photosensitive reaction.

Exposure to UV light should be avoided for 12-18 hours following the application of most citrus oils and for up to 72 hours following Bergamot oil. The safest practice is to avoid applying photosensitizing oils to skin that is exposed to light and to avoid applying Bergamot oil to the skin altogether (it can be used safely via diffusion).
